# Track management

## In this lesson you will learn how to

* add or remove a track,
* mute other track,
* switch between tracks,
* specify track names.

## Before you start

This lesson requires a songfile with first track ready. You can either do it yourself for practice or download the files from here:

{% file src="<https://2464591649-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FWYWuwgmUrVIBcYKbiiso%2Fuploads%2F4YnLXSME6cYhogyOSYtx%2FDavid%20Amber%20-%20Second%20Time%20Around%20%5Btracks%5D.zip?alt=media&token=8b7dcd9a-beae-4947-9316-5c59e9c31ca9>" %}

## Track management

Karedi lets you map songs with multiple tracks. Current list of tracks is visible in the [track manager](#track-management).

### Adding a track

To add a new track go to the menu *Edit -> Add -> Track*.

<figure><img src="https://2464591649-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FWYWuwgmUrVIBcYKbiiso%2Fuploads%2FgueWBeP6r2ojuAa0cGIm%2Fimage.png?alt=media&#x26;token=0a799765-3aca-4894-bbc1-26c98c5fd490" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

As you can see in the picture 2 things happened at once:

* new red track was added,
* blue track became inactive.

To re-activate blue track either click on it in track manager or just press *Tab*.

<figure><img src="https://2464591649-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FWYWuwgmUrVIBcYKbiiso%2Fuploads%2FRz6a3sXPgurPiyiTnKFl%2Fimage.png?alt=media&#x26;token=21be64cf-e97e-424d-8e96-edc46f851cdc" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Removing a track

To remove the red track you should select it and either press `delete` with focus in the track manager or use the menu *Edit -> Delete -> Track*.

### Adding notes to the second track

Let's re-add the red track. Once it is active you can start mapping the vocal line in the exact same way as you did with the first track.&#x20;

<figure><img src="https://2464591649-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FWYWuwgmUrVIBcYKbiiso%2Fuploads%2FO5z6s0KPjZ8mdPm0Nj7c%2Fimage.png?alt=media&#x26;token=bee3315f-a5e8-4f92-9176-60abf5546d3d" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Blue track is inactive - its notes and lines can not be accessed, however by default they are visible and audible.

<figure><img src="https://2464591649-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FWYWuwgmUrVIBcYKbiiso%2Fuploads%2FHb1883qvNolqNOcRo0b3%2Fimage.png?alt=media&#x26;token=230e9d42-1f3f-416a-b465-6dbf78b0f4bb" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Hiding & muting other tracks

The notes from the other track may affect the range of beats that is visible, therefore you may want to hide them in such case. To hide some tracks' notes just disable the checkbox in *Visible* column in tracks manager.

![](https://2464591649-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FWYWuwgmUrVIBcYKbiiso%2Fuploads%2Fdly47zwTOzbBM8uD7Fwr%2Fimage.png?alt=media\&token=6f00de28-c16e-4ab1-9913-0924b7a66f9b)

<figure><img src="https://2464591649-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FWYWuwgmUrVIBcYKbiiso%2Fuploads%2FBNQeiFjG7WWqwQUiKrAz%2Fimage.png?alt=media&#x26;token=4789632f-65d1-4499-9974-93f8fa129999" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

The track will still be audible which may bother you while working on synchronization or pitches of the current track. To mute it just enable the checkbox in *Muted* column.

### Switching between tracks

You can switch between tracks by using `Tab` (go to the next track) and `Shift + Tab` (go to the previous track) shortcuts. Active track can be changed even in the middle of the playback or note tapping.

{% hint style="info" %}
Activating a track automatically makes it visible and audible
{% endhint %}

### Specifying tracks' names

If you are working on a multi-track song, you should specify the track names so that the players in Ultrastar will know which part they will be singing.

To change the track's name just double-click on the current placeholder name in track manager and change it to the desired value.

#### What name should I use?

Singer names. However anything that will make it obvious to the players' what track we mean is good, e.g. Female/Male, Main/Background etc.

### Working with more than 2 tracks

The process is exactly the same whether you have 2 or 15 tracks. You can map as many as you need although remember that not all Ultrastar distributions even support duet songs, let alone anything more complex.

## Shortcuts summary:

Let's summarize the shortcuts that we have learned in this lesson:

* switch to the next track: `tab`
* switch to the previous track: `shift + tab`

## What's next

Before moving on the next lesson you can try to map first to male verses, because in the next lesson we will continue from the rap part starting at beat 3616.
