Without hearing the audio, correctly mapping the vocal track is impossible. After all, every note's beginning and end in the transcription must match the singer's, otherwise the player's performance in Ultrastar will not be properly graded.

Besides real audio of the song, it is also very useful to have the possibility to hear a synthesizer that will generate a sound in the given pitch. You can then compare the pitch you assigned to a note with the pitch the singer sings in to verify that it is set correctly.

Karedi gives you these possibilites in various flavours.

Playback scopes

Karedi supports several scopes of playbacks:

  1. Selection - play the selected notes.

  2. Visible area - play the visible range of time in the .

  3. To the end - play everything from the to the end of the song.

  4. Whole song - play everything from the beginning to the end of the song.

  5. Medley - play the range of time marked as .

For each scope you can execute playback in all main modes.

Playback modes

There are 3 main modes of playbacks:

  1. Audio only - only the audio file is being played.

  2. Midi only - audio file is not being played at all; instead the synthesizer generates sounds in given pitches for every note at the right moment of time.

  3. Audio & Midi - combination of the upper two modes - you can hear both the audio and for every note's a synthesized sound in its pitch.

Audio playback

Audio playback is mostly used to verify the timing - beginnings and ends of the notes. That's why in audio playback you can hear ticks - each tick sound marks the beginning of the note.

You can disable ticks by going to the menu Play and disabling the option Enable ticks (or by pressing "ctrl + w" shortcut).

Midi playback

Midi playback is a way to hear what your vocal transcription sounds like - the synthesizer generates sound in a given pitch whenever the time marker reaches the next note.

You can execute midi playback and audio playback alternatively to verify the transcription's correctness and adjust any inconsistencies.

Audio & midi playback

During audio & midi playback mode you can hear both the audio (without ticks) and synthesized midi sounds. The main purpose of this mode is verifying the correctness of the finished part of vocal track transcription.

Shortcut hint

Depending on the scope, the base audio playback is invoked by a different key. However:

  • midi only playback will be always trigerred by the same key + shift modifier

  • audio & midi playback will be always triggered by the same key + ctrl modifier.

You can of course just choose the type of playback you want from the menu, but it is easier to use the shortcuts.

Multitrack playback

Playback speed

There is also a special type, which is used for finetuning timing - notes' start and end beats.

If during audio & midi playback, audio is too loud or quiet, adjust its relative volume in the .

If your song has multiple tracks, you will hear the notes from other tracks as well (if you use any other scope than selection). If you don't want to hear other track's notes, you need to it.

The playback speed is adjustable and can be changed by using in the toolbar.
